How Much Does a Fractional CMO Cost in Europe?

By Robyn Lighton · 12 October 2026 · 6 min read

Price follows ownership, not job title. Here's how fractional CMO pricing works in Europe, and what you're really paying for.

Short answer: in Europe, a fractional CMO typically costs a fraction of a full-time executive salary, priced either as a monthly retainer or a day rate. The right number depends less on the title and more on how much ownership you need: advice, embedded leadership, or hands-on management of a team.

Founders ask about cost early, and they should. But comparing day rates alone hides the more useful question: what are you actually paying someone to be responsible for?

The three common pricing models

1. Monthly retainer. The most common model. You agree a scope (for example, one or two days a week) and a fixed monthly fee. It gives predictability on both sides and suits ongoing leadership.

2. Day rate. Useful for short, defined pieces of work: a strategy sprint, a planning cycle, or support during a board process. It becomes harder to manage when the scope grows week by week.

3. Project fee. A fixed price for a defined outcome, such as a growth diagnostic or a go-to-market plan. Good when you need clarity before committing to ongoing leadership.

What drives the price

- Level of ownership. Advising a founder is different from owning targets, budget and a team. - Time commitment. Half a day a week and three days a week are different roles. - Team leadership. Managing people and agencies adds responsibility and time. - Complexity. Multiple markets, channels or products increase the scope. - Speed. Urgent situations (a departure, a funding round, a stalled pipeline) often need more time up front.

Fractional vs. full-time: the real comparison

A full-time CMO or VP Marketing carries salary, employer costs, equity, recruitment fees and a long hiring process. Many companies also discover, months in, that they hired for a stage they had not yet reached.

A fractional leader costs less, starts sooner and can be scaled up or down. The trade-off is availability: they are not in every meeting, so the scope needs to be clear.

How we price it at Yellow Carpet Studio

Our Fractional Growth and Marketing Leadership runs from €1,500 per month for advisory support to €3,000 per month for embedded leadership. Interim cover, where we step fully into a role, starts from €4,000 per month. Every engagement is scoped first, so you know what you are paying for.

Questions to ask before you sign

1. What will this person own, and what will they only advise on? 2. How will success be measured after 90 days? 3. Who does the execution: them, your team or agencies? 4. How is the engagement ended or handed over?

Key takeaways

- Price follows ownership, not job title. - Retainers suit ongoing leadership; project fees suit defined problems. - Agree success measures before agreeing a fee. - A good fractional leader should make your next hire easier, not replace the need forever.
